Other common names: Harlequin Quail; Mearns Quail (mearnsi); Salle's Quail (sallei)

Taxonomy: Ortyx Montezumae Vigors, 1830, Mexico.
May be conspecific with C. ocellatus, with which forms superspecies. Race sallei sometimes considered full species. Five subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • mearnsi Nelson, 1900 - scattered populations in S USA (W & C Texas, S New Mexico and S Arizona) and N & NW Mexico. Also reported from Nayarit, CW Mexico.
  • montezumae (Vigors, 1830) - Tamaulipas S through Hildago to Oaxaca, E Mexico; sometimes claimed not to occur in Oaxaca.
  • merriami Nelson, 1897 - Mt Orizaba, Veracruz, EC Mexico.
