Taxonomy: Psittacus militaris Linnaeus, 1766, no locality, Colombia suggested.
Sometimes treated as conspecific with A. ambigua, but in spite of evidence of interbreeding the characters of the two forms are consistently different over their respective ranges. Three subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- mexicana Ridgway, 1915 - Mexico.
- militaris (Linnaeus, 1766) - NW Venezuela, Colombia, E Ecuador and N Peru.
- boliviana Reichenow, 1908 - Bolivia and N Argentina.
