New World Warblers (Parulidae)

Masked Yellowthroat (Geothlypis aequinoctialis) - HBW 15, p. 773

French: Paruline équatoriale German: Maskengelbkehlchen Spanish: Mascarita Equinoccial
Other common names: Black-lored Yellowthroat (auricularis, peruviana); Chiriqui Yellowthroat (chiriquensis); Southern Yellowthroat (velata)

Taxonomy: Motacilla aequinoctialis J. F. Gmelin, 1789, French Guiana.
Races geographically discrete; chiriquensis sometimes considered a separate species, and recently suggested, on basis of mitochondrial DNA, to be closer to G. subflava than to other forms currently included herein. In one recent study, nominate race, chiriquensis, auricularis and velata found to be genetically distinct from one another; vocal differences also apparent. They may be better treated as four separate species, with peruviana then a race of auricularis; some authors have suggested that peruviana differs from auricularis .. View all taxonomy...

Further research required. Five subspecies currently recognized.
