Eight subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • castigatus Bangs, 1901 - SW Costa Rica and (?formerly) W Panama.
  • marmoratus (Gould, 1844) - E Panama to N Colombia and NW Venezuela.
  • gujanensis (Gmelin, 1789) - SE Venezuela, Guianas and Brazil (S to Mato Grosso) and extreme N Paraguay.
