Taxonomy: Procellaria puffinus Brünnich, 1764, Faeroes and Norway.
Closely allied to P. yelkouan, P. huttoni, P. opisthomelas, P. auricularis and P. gavia, all of which have been considered races of present species. Monotypic.
Distribution: N Atlantic: islets off Massachusetts and Newfoundland; S Iceland S through Faeroes and British Isles to NW France; Azores though Madeira and Desertas Is to Canary Is.
