Other common names: Malayan/Tiger Bittern
Taxonomy: Ardea melanolopha Raffles, 1822, western Sumatra.
Sometimes placed with all other night herons in genus Nycticorax. May form superspecies with G. goisagi. Monotypic.
Distribution: SW India, in Western Ghats, S to Nilgiris and S Kerala; Assam to S China and S through Indochina to Philippines; Nicobar Is. Winters in Sri Lanka, Malay Peninsula and Greater Sundas.
