Taxonomy: Pluvianellus socialis G. R. Gray, 1846, Straits of Magellan.
Relationships unclear and somewhat controversial: shows several unique features, and sometimes considered to form separate monospecific family, Pluvianellidae (see page 386); possibly related to sheathbills (Chionidae). Monotypic.

Distribution: Extreme S Chile and S Argentina. Winters N to Valdés Peninsula, SC Argentina.
