Taxonomy: Aptenodytes magellanicus J. R. Forster, 1781, Strait of Magellan.
Sometimes considered conspecific with S. demersus and S. humboldti; alternatively they may form superspecies (see page 141). Monotypic.

Distribution: S coasts of South America, from C Chile and C Argentina S to Cape Horn; also breeds in Falkland Is.
