Taxonomy: Psittacella madarászi A. B. Meyer, 1886, south-eastern spurs of the Owen Stanley Range, New Guinea.
Four subspecies recognized.

- hallstromi Mayr & Gilliard, 1951 - C New Guinea.
- huonensis Mayr & Rand, 1935 - Huon Peninsula.
- madaraszi A. B. Meyer, 1886 - SE New Guinea.
