Rails, Gallinules and Coots (Rallidae)
Madagascar Wood-rail (Canirallus kioloides) - HBW 3, p. 149
French: Râle à gorge blanche
German: Graukehlralle
Spanish: Rascón Kioloide
Other common names: Kioloides Rail, Grey-throated Wood-rail
Taxonomy: Gallinula kioloides Pucheran, 1845, Madagascar.
Formerly placed in monospecific genus Mentocrex on basis of imperforate nostrils (those of C. oculeus are perforate), but this character is not now considered generically important. Birds from Bemaraha apparently differ sufficiently in plumage coloration to be regarded as a further, as yet undescribed, race. Two subspecies currently recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- kioloides (Pucheran, 1845) - E half of Madagascar.
- berliozi (Salomonsen, 1934) - Sambirano, NW Madagascar.
- Least Concern Enlarge map
