Taxonomy: Turdus albo-specularis Eydoux and Gervais, 1836, Maroantsetra, north-eastern Madagascar.
May form a superspecies with C. sechellarum and C. saularis. Considerable overlap among races, and intergradation occurs in belly colour of males, e.g. at Zahamena, in CE Madagascar; width of intergradation zone not clear. Birds from around Ihosy described as race winterbottomi, male with all-black tail, female with extensive white spots on outer three rectrices and white outer webs of two longest secondaries; included within inexpectatus, but may warrant recognition. Three subspecies recognized
