Taxonomy: Macropygia mackinlayi E. P. Ramsay, 1878, Tanna Island.
Forms a superspecies with M. nigrirostris and M. ruficeps. Race krakari has been regarded as invalid. Four subspecies recognized.

  • goodsoni Hartert, 1924 - Admiralty and St Matthias Is, Squally, Watom (off NE New Britain) and Witu Is; also Talasea district of WC New Britain.
  • krakari Rothschild & Hartert, 1915 - Karkar I.
  • arossi Tristram, 1879 - Solomon Is.
  • mackinlayi E. P. Ramsay, 1878 - Santa Cruz Is, Banks Is and Vanuatu.
