Taxonomy: Pelecanus africanus Gmelin, 1789, Africa.
Often includes P. coronatus as race. Frequently placed in Halietor or Microcarbo. Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- africanus (Gmelin, 1789) - Africa S of Sahara.
- pictilis Bangs, 1918 - Madagascar.
