Taxonomy: Numenius americanus Bechstein, 1812, New York.
Race parvus formerly labelled occidentalis; type specimen of latter lost. Two subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • parvus Bishop, 1910 - SC British Columbia E to S Manitoba, and S to California and South Dakota; winters from California and Louisiana S to Mexico.
  • americanus Bechstein, 1812 - Nevada E to South Dakota and S through Utah and NW Oklahoma to N Texas; winters from California, and Texas S to Mexico and Guatemala.
