Taxonomy: Picus passerinus Linnaeus, 1766, Dominica; error = Cayenne.
Forms a superspecies with V. frontalis; the two sometimes hybridize, and have occasionally been considered conspecific. Races tend to intergrade. Birds from extreme W French Guiana described as race saturatus and those from E Brazil (N Goiás, W Bahia) as transfluvialis, but appear to be no more than intergrades. Nine subspecies recognized.
