Taxonomy: Hydrocorax melanoleucos Vieillot, 1817, Australasie = New South Wales.
Frequently placed in Halietor or Microcarbo. Polymorphic race brevirostris may be distinct species. Three subspecies normally recognized.

- brevicauda Mayr, 1931 - Rennell I (Solomon Is).
