Other common names: Fairy/Blue/Little Blue Penguin; White-flippered Penguin (albosignata)

Taxonomy: Aptenodytes minor J. R. Forster, 1781, Dusky Sound, South Island, New Zealand.
Race albosignata has often been considered distinct species; some dispute concerning validity of races, and recent evidence points to N-S cline (see page 141). Six subspecies normally recognized.
