Taxonomy: Picus maculosus Valenciennes, 1826, Senegal.
Forms a superspecies with C. cailliautii. Hybridizes rarely with latter in Ghana. Monotypic.
Distribution: Senegal and W Guinea-Bissau E in coastal zone to C Ghana (Aburi region); extends inland to Mt Nimba (Liberia).
