Other common names: Guiana Chachalaca; Rufous headed Chachalaca (ruficeps)
Taxonomy: Phasianus Motmot Linnaeus, 1766, Brazil and Guiana = Cayenne.
Forms superspecies with O. guttata and O. superciliaris, and probably also with O. leucogastra. Both O. guttata and O. superciliaris have been included in present species (see page 313). Race ruficeps has recently been considered full species by some authors. Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- motmot (Linnaeus, 1766) - S Venezuela, the Guianas and N Brazil, N of R Amazon.
- ruficeps (Wagler, 1830) - NC Brazil, S of R Amazon.
