Taxonomy: Ardea caerulea Linnaeus, 1758, South Carolina.
Sometimes placed in monospecific genus Florida. Monotypic.
Distribution: N America, from Massachusetts to Florida and thence to E Mexico and W Indies; also from S part of Gulf of California through Central America into N half of South America, extending S to Peru, Bolivia and S Brazil.
