Apparently most closely related to L. souleyetii and to L. affinis and L. lacrymiger; one study based on morphology, however, suggested that it may be the sister to L. angustirostris and L. leucogaster. Nominate race is morphologically distinct, with remaining races (the “fuscicapillus group”) recognized by some authors as a separate species. Assessment of geographical variation complicated, however, by lack of concordance between morphology and vocalizations in S Amazonia; layardi and fuscicapillus similar morphologically, but with strikingly different vocalizations; intermediates between races layardi and madeirae occur in S Amazonian Brazil (Serra do Cachimbo, on E bank of R Tapajós in NC Mato Grosso). Five subspecies recognized.
