Taxonomy: Capito lineatus Vieillot, 1816, Australasia; error = Java.
Forms a superspecies with M. zeylanica, and often treated as conspecific in past, but no apparent hybridization in the narrow area of sympatry in N India and SW Nepal. Possibly related also to M. viridis and M. faiostricta, but not very closely. Race hodgsoni tends towards nominate race in Peninsular Malaysia; other forms described include rana (Kumaon to WCNepal), kutru (Orissa) and intermedia (Myanmar to Indochina), but all now included within hodgsoni. Two subspecies currently recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • hodgsoni (Bonaparte, 1850) - NW India and Nepal E to SC China (W Yunnan), S to Orissa, Bangladesh, Manipur, S Myanmar, SC Vietnam and N Peninsular Malaysia.
  • lineata (Vieillot, 1816) - Java and Bali.
