Limpkin (Aramidae)

Limpkin (Aramus guarauna) - HBW 3, p. 95

French: Courlan brun German: Rallenkranich Spanish: Carrao

Taxonomy: Scopolax [sic] Guarauna Linnaeus, 1766, Cayenne.
Shows morphological affinities with Gruidae and Rallidae; recent work with DNA suggests possible grouping with finfoots in family Heliornithidae. In past, N birds were considered to constitute a separate species, A. pictus. Present species formerly known as A. scolopaceus, but species name pre-dated by guarauna; in past, on occasion, South American birds were split into two races, scolopaceus (Colombia to C Brazil) and carau (S Brazil to Paraguay, Uruguay and N Argentina). Four subespecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • pictus (F. A. A. Meyer, 1794) - Florida, Cuba and Jamaica.
  • elucus J. L. Peters, 1925 - Hispaniola and Puerto Rico.
  • dolosus J. L. Peters, 1925 - SE Mexico to Panama.
  • guarauna (Linnaeus, 1766) - South America, except arid W coast, Andes and extreme S.
