Other common names: Lilac-throated Roller (lorti)
Taxonomy: Coracias caudata Linnaeus, 1766, Angola.
Often regarded as forming a superspecies with C. abyssinicus and C. garrulus, though probably more closely allied to former. Species name frequently given as feminine, caudata, as in original description, but genus is masculine. Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- lorti Shelley, 1885 - Eritrea S to Somalia and NE Kenya.
- caudatus Linnaeus, 1766 - Angola E to C & E Kenya, S to Namibia and N South Africa.
