Taxonomy: Pteroglossus inscriptus Swainson, 1822, Guyana; error = Pará, Brazil.
May form a superspecies with P. viridis. Less closely related to P. bitorquatus and P. azara. Race humboldti sometimes considered a separate species, but interbreeds sporadically with nominate race in R Madeira region; humboldti placed within P. viridis by some authors, but appears more appropriately treated with present species. Form from upper Amazonia, described as race didymus, now considered a synonym of humboldti; form described from R Juruá as “olallae”, and initially thought to be full species, found to be hybrid betw.. Form from upper Amazonia, described as race didymus, now considered a synonym of humboldti; form described from R Juruá as “olallae”, and initially thought to be full species, found to be hybrid between humboldti and P. azara mariae. Two subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • humboldti Wagler, 1827 - SE Colombia and W Brazil (E narrowly along Amazon to R Negro mouth in N, broadly E, S of Amazon, to R Madeira, crossing it occasionally in N and, more often, in S), S in lowlands E of Andes to NC Bolivia.
  • inscriptus Swainson, 1822 - NC Brazil S of Amazon (from R Madeira E to Maranhão, NW Piauí), S to E Bolivia, SW Mato Grosso (in upper R Paraguay drainage) and upper R Tocantins; also E Brazil in Pernambuco and E Alagoas.
