Taxonomy: Cathartes burrovianus Cassin, 1845, near Veracruz City, Mexico.
Taxonomic status of all three Cathartes species rather uncertain. Present species has been placed in superspecies with C. melambrotus, but the two are widely sympatric. Formerly called C. urubitinga or C. urubutinga. Two subspecies sometimes recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • burrovianus Cassin, 1845 - Central America S to C Colombia and NW Venezuela.
  • urubitinga Pelzeln, 1861 - lowland South America.
