Taxonomy: Fuligula affinis Eyton, 1838, North America.
Considered by some to form superspecies with A. marila. Hybridization with other species of Aythya, particularly A. marila, producing fertile progeny, frequent in captivity. Monotypic.
Distribution: C Alaska to NW USA, and E to Great Lakes.
