Rheas (Rheidae)

Lesser Rhea (Pterocnemia pennata) - HBW 1, p. 89

French: Nandou de Darwin German: Darwinnandu Spanish: Ñandú Petizo
Other common names: Darwin's Rhea; Puna Rhea (tarapacensis/garleppi)

Taxonomy: Rhea pennata d'Orbigny, 1834, Río Negro, S Buenos Aires.
Race tarapacensis may merit consideration as full species; garleppi would also be included, but may not deserve subspecific status and possibly better fused into single (sub)species. P. pennata has been crossed with R. americana in captivity. Three subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • garleppi Chubb, 1913 - S Peru, SW Bolivia, NW Argentina.
  • tarapacensis Chubb, 1913 - N Chile.
  • pennata (d'Orbigny, 1834) - S Chile, WC & S Argentina.
