Taxonomy: Charadrius lugubris Lesson, 1826, Senegal.
Sometimes placed in Hoplopterus or Stephanibyx. Has been proposed to form superspecies with V. melanopterus, but not supported by behavioural or morphological data. Monotypic.
Distribution: S Mali; N of forest zone in Guinea-Bissau and Ivory Coast; coast from Sierra Leone to SW Nigeria; Gabon, W Zaire and CW Angola E to Kenya, and S through Tanzania, NE Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique to E South Africa (Natal); Zanzibar, Latham and Mafia Is.
