Taxonomy: Capito richardsoni G. R. Gray, 1846, no locality = Ecuador.
No close relatives, and the only lowland member of genus. A specimen from upper R Napo (Ecuador) represents a hybrid between nominate race of present species and race orientalis of E. bourcierii. N races with blue nape sometimes combined as “richardsoni group”, with yellow-naped S races referred to as “aurantiicollis group”. Form from S Colombia and N Peru described as granadensis considered synonymous with nominate, but possibly a valid race; birds from C Peru named as race coccineus now considered inseparable from aurantiicollis. Subspecies and Distribution:

  • richardsoni (G. R. Gray, 1846) - SE Colombia (S from Meta), E Ecuador and N Peru (W of Iquitos).
  • nigriceps Chapman, 1928 - NE Peru from lower R Putumayo and lower R Napo, E to extreme NW Brazil (W Amazonas N of Amazon).
  • aurantiicollis P. L. Sclater, 1858 - E Peru from R Marañón, E to W Brazil S of Amazon (E almost to R Juruá) and S to NW Bolivia.
  • purusianus Gyldenstolpe, 1941 - W Brazil S of Amazon, from R Juruá E to upper R Madeira.
