Taxonomy: Thinocorus rumicivorus Eschscholtz, 1829, Concepción, Chile.
Southernmost populations formerly awarded separate race, patagonicus, but not normally accepted nowadays. Four subspecies currently recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • pallidus Salvadori & Festa, 1910 - lowlands of SW Ecuador and extreme NW Peru.
  • cuneicauda (Peale, 1848) - Peruvian Desert.
  • bolivianus Lowe, 1921 - Altiplano from extreme S Peru through N Chile and W Bolivia to NW Argentina (Jujuy).
  • rumicivorus Eschscholtz, 1829 - Patagonian steppe S to N Tierra del Fuego; migrates to C Chile and plains of NE Argentina and Uruguay.
