Taxonomy: Colymbus dominicus Linnaeus, 1766, Dominica = Santo Domingo.
Sometimes included in Podiceps, less often in Poliocephalus. Alternatively separated in monospecific genus Limnodytes. Subspecies brachyrhynchus synonymous with speciosus; birds from W Ecuador sometimes placed in separate race eisenmanni. Four subspecies normally recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • dominicus (Linnaeus, 1766) - N Caribbean, from Cozumel I (off SE Mexico) to Virgin Is and N to Bahamas.
  • brachypterus (Chapman, 1899) - WC Mexico and S Texas S to Panama.
  • bangsi (van Rossem & Hachisuka, 1937) - S Baja California.
  • speciosus (Lynch Arribálzaga, 1877) - S America, S to N Argentina and S Brazil.
