Laughing Gull (Larus atricilla) - HBW 3, p. 618

Taxonomy: Larus Atricilla Linnaeus, 1758, Bahamas.
Considered an excellent “structural ancestor” of all other hooded gulls. Two subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • megalopterus Bruch, 1855 - SE California to W Mexico (Jalisco), and Nova Scotia to Florida and Texas, locally through E Central America; winters S to S Peru.
  • atricilla Linnaeus, 1758 - West Indies to Trinidad and islands off Venezuela; winters S to N Brazil.
