Taxonomy: Turnix Meiffrenii Vieillot, 1819, Senegal.
Differs from Turnix in morphology, ecology and behaviour (see page 44); shape and structure, especially of wings and tail, and colour pattern of upperwing quite different. Monotypic.

Distribution: Tropical Africa, from Senegal E to Sudan and Kenya; breeds in S Ghana and possibly elsewhere in W Africa.
