Taxonomy: Bucco lanceolata Deville, 1849, Pampa del Sacramento, upper Ucayali River, eastern Peru.
Birds from Costa Rica to W Panama named as race austinsmithi, but characters weak and inconstant. Monotypic.
Distribution: Caribbean slope of Costa Rica and WC Panama; also from SW & WC Colombia S on both sides of Andes, in W to NW Ecuador and in E to NE Peru, extreme W Brazil and N Bolivia.
