Woodpeckers (Picidae)
Laced Woodpecker (Picus vittatus) - HBW 7, p. 539
French: Pic médiastin
German: Netzbauchspecht
Spanish: Pito Colinegro
Other common names: Laced Green Woodpecker, Small Scaly-bellied (Green) Woodpecker
Taxonomy: Picus vittatus Vieillot, 1818, Java.
Forms a superspecies with P. viridanus. Sometimes considered conspecific, but may be separated by habitat, although some possible overlap in this respect; further study needed. S & E populations tend to have more bronze tinge on upperparts, and rump colour tends more towards orange in E, but much individual variation, and racial separation unwarranted. Proposed races eisenhoferi (N Thailand), connectens (Langkawi I, off NW Peninsular Malaysia) and limitans (Kangean I) considered unacceptable. Monotypic.
Distribution: E Myanmar E to extreme SC China (S Yunnan) and N Vietnam (N Annam), and S to S Thailand, Cochinchina, W & S Peninsular Malaysia, E Sumatra (including Lingga Archipelago), Java, Bali and Kangean Is.
