Other common names: Large Bustard
Taxonomy: Otis Kori Burchell, 1822, confluence of Vaal and Orange Rivers.
In past, genus frequently labelled Choriotis, but Ardeotis has priority; genus sometimes merged with Otis. Present species forms superspecies with A. arabs. Sometimes alternatively considered to form superspecies with A. nigriceps and A. australis; these three have even been lumped together in single species, A. kori. All four Ardeotis have occasionally been placed in same superspecies. Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- struthiunculus (Neumann, 1907) - NW Somalia and C Ethiopia through SE Sudan, NE Uganda and Kenya to N Tanzania.
- kori (Burchell, 1822) - S Angola and Namibia E through Botswana to S Zimbabwe and S Mozambique, and S to South Africa.
