Taxonomy: Aptenodytes patagonica J. F. Miller, 1778, South Georgia.
Validity of division into subspecies sometimes questioned and species may be better considered monotypic. Some evidence of genetic differences between populations of Kerguelen and Crozet Is. Two subspecies normally recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- patagonicus J. F. Miller, 1778 - Falkland Is, South Georgia; formerly S tip of S America.
- halli Mathews, 1911 - Southern Ocean from Marion I eastwards to Macquarie I.
