Three subespecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- vociferus Linnaeus, 1758 - Canada, USA and Mexico; winters S to NW South America.
- ternominatus Bangs & Kennard, 1920 - Greater Antilles.
- peruvianus (Chapman, 1920) - Peru and NW Chile.
