Plovers (Charadriidae)
Kentish Plover (Charadrius alexandrinus) - HBW 3, p. 432
French: Pluvier à collier interrompu
German: Seeregenpfeifer
Spanish: Chorlitejo Patinegro
Other common names: Snowy Plover (New World races), Sandplover
Taxonomy: Charadrius alexandrinus Linnaeus, 1758, Egypt.
Forms superspecies with C. marginatus, C. javanicus and C. ruficapillus; all of these have on occasion been considered conspecific with present species, especially C. javanicus (see page 386); in contrast, races nivosus and occidentalis sometimes considered to constitute one or two additional distinct species. Part of population on Gulf of Mexico often separated as race tenuirostris, on basis of supposedly paler coloration, but many recent authors include it in nivosus. Five subspecies usually recognized.
