Taxonomy: Prionites carinatus Du Bus de Gisignies, 1847, Guatemala.
Appears closely related to E. platyrhynchum, and the two might even be conspecific: they are very similar in structure and, apparently, in vocalizations, although differing notably in plumage; also, mixed pair, with courtship feeding, recorded in two successive seasons in Costa Rica; further research required. Monotypic.
Distribution: S Mexico (from SE Veracruz and Oaxaca) E through Guatemala and C & S Belize to N Honduras, C & E Nicaragua and N Costa Rica.
