Taxonomy: Caprimulgus indicus Latham, 1790, India.
Sometimes reckoned to be an eastern counterpart of C. europaeus. Five subspecies recognized.

- hazarae Whistler & Kinnear, 1935 - NE Pakistan E across Himalayas to NE India, Bangladesh and S China (Yunnan), S through Myanmar and Malay Peninsula.
- indicus Latham, 1790 - India S of Himalayas (absent W Rajasthan and Kachchh).
- kelaarti Blyth, 1852 - Sri Lanka.
