Taxonomy: Ardea speciosa Horsfield, 1821, Java.
Forms superspecies with A. grayii, A. bacchus and perhaps A. idae. Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- continentalis Salomonsen, 1933 - C Thailand, S Indochina.
- speciosa (Horsfield, 1821) - W & C Indonesia.
