Plovers (Charadriidae)

Javan Plover (Charadrius javanicus) - HBW 3, p. 432

French: Pluvier de Java German: Javaregenpfeifer Spanish: Chorlitejo Javanés
Other common names: Javan Sandplover

Taxonomy: Charadrius javanicus Chasen, 1938, Java.
Taxonomic status very unclear: may well not merit full species status, but various authors associate it with different species; most often treated as race of C. alexandrinus; alternatively linked with C. ruficapillus or with C. peronii, although structurally appears to be quite different from latter; very poorly known, and much more research needed. Tentatively treated as distinct species, forming superspecies with C. marginatus, C. alexandrinus and C. ruficapillus. Monotypic.

Distribution: Java and Kangean Is; possibly also Bali.
