Taxonomy: Ibis nippon Temminck, 1835, Japan.
Around end of 19th century race sinensis described, but this turned out to be same birds in breeding plumage. Monotypic.
Distribution: Once widespread in NE Asia and Japan, wintering S to Hainan, range now much reduced; only known population in Quinling Mts, Shaanxi Province, NE China.
