Taxonomy complex. Probably forms a superspecies with A. pusilla, with which has often been treated as conspecific; some hybridization between the two likely in SE South Australia, where individuals with intermediate plumage occur. Race diemenensis of A. pusilla seems to be genetically more like present species. Proposed race tanami (from arid interior in N Western Australia, Tanami district and Dalmore Downs, in Northern Territory, E to Duchess, in Queensland) is considered synonymous with whitlocki; described race leeuwinensis (humid coast of SW Aust..
