Taxonomy: Sylvia icterina Vieillot, 1817, Nancy, France.
Sister-species of H. polyglotta, the two being fairly close to the sister-species pair formed by H. languida and H. olivetorum. Proposed race alaris (described from N Iran, thus outside current known breeding range of this species) considered undiagnosable. Monotypic.

Distribution: Breeds Scandinavia and S Finland E to WC Russia (E side of R Ob’), S to NE France, S Germany, Romania and locally N Balkans, Ukraine, Crimea and region E of Sea of Azov; non-breeding S Africa.
