Houbara Bustard (Chlamydotis undulata) - HBW 3, p. 264

Other common names: Ruffed Bustard

Taxonomy: Psophia undulata Jacquin, 1784, captive bird from Tripoli.
Apparently close to Neotis (see page 240). Recent work suggests that race macqueenii might merit treatment as separate species. Three subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • fuertaventurae (Rothschild & Hartert, 1894) - E Canary Is.
  • undulata (Jacquin, 1784) - N Africa, E to NC Egypt.
  • macqueenii (J. E. Gray, 1832) - Middle East and Arabia E to Iran and extreme W Pakistan. Also breeds from NW Kazakhstan and NE Iran E to Mongolia and N China, wintering from Persian Gulf to Pakistan and NW India, and in C China.
