Taxonomy: Phasianus Hoazin P. L. S. Müller, 1776, Cayenne.
Monotypic family of uncertain affinities. Some morphological similarities with Galliformes, especially Cracidae; recent work suggests relationship with Cuculiformes, near Crotophaginae; closest relatives and position in linear hierarchy remain controversial (see page 24). Monotypic.
Distribution: E of Andes, from Colombia, Venezuela and the Guianas S to Ecuador, Peru, N & C Brazil and Bolivia.
