Taxonomy: Podiceps poliocephalus Jardine and Selby, 1827, New South Wales.
Formerly included in Podiceps, and less frequently in Tachybaptus. Forms superspecies with P. rufopectus. Monotypic.
Distribution: Australia and Tasmania; recent isolated breeding in New Zealand.
